26 Mar What Are Self-Care And Self-Love Really?
Every time I ask my clients what they think self-care and self-love are or how they could practice it this week, they answer with something external to them.
Something like going to the spa, taking a bath, taking time off, getting a manicure or pedicure.
In my opinion, this kind of self-care and self-love acts like a Band-Aid… It won’t heal anything.
Self-care and self-love are really about taking care of yourself emotionally, mentally and physically.
Self-care is about being there and showing up for yourself. It’s about loving yourself enough to not put yourself in situations that could hurt you or “leave you hanging”. Self-love is about taking responsibility for your life because you deserve it.
Few of us know how to care for ourselves. That is one of the biggest challenges we face. We were taught to care for others, listen to others, give to others and put ourselves last.
So how do we care and love ourselves?
By healing the parts of us that we were made to believe were bad or wrong and by giving ourselves what we are looking to receive from others. It requires commitment because this work can be painful at times. It also demands discipline (I prefer calling it Divine Devotion!) and perseverance… but we are worth it.
I know for myself, the one thing that made all the difference is the gift I gave myself of working with my mentor/coach. For the past 9 years, I have someone accompanying me. Many times I could have had the excuse of not having the money or no time, but this work is priceless and lasts a lifetime. I now know that self-care and self-love is about knowing and believing I am worth it…
It’s time to love and care for yourself.
PS: Of course, a pedi and a day at the spa is always nice…! That’s the treat you can give yourself for doing your inner work!!! 😉
